When Heroes Lie is opening film for DocPoint Tallinn festival
Press release 23.1.2013
Arto Halonen’s When Heroes Lie is the opening film in the DocPoint Tallinn festival on Friday 25.1.2013. Halonen will also give a Master Class on January 25th at the Tallinn University Baltic Film and Media School. The Master Class is aimed at movie-making professionals, but also at students and people who are interested in film.
DocPoint Tallinn is being held for the fourth year in a row. The festival is focused on documentary films and will feature a total of 46 different movies for its 2013 programme.
The festival will also show three other documentary films from Arto Halonen: Karmapa – Two Ways of Divinity (1998), The Tank Man (2004) and Shadow of the Holy Book (2007).
Halonen’s feature film opening the festival, When Heroes Lie, is a bold documentary that exposes the brutal doping history of Finnish cross-country skiing and reveals the international framework of lies that exists in professional sports.
When Heroes Lie uses the doping scandal at the Lahti 2001 World Ski Championships to examine the sport-doping culture both in Finland and abroad. The story progresses from Finland to Italy, Norway and Sweden, and draws a picture of the doping-corrosion in elite-sport, where a corrupt system forces individual athletes and coaches to serve as scapegoats if they are caught doping.
The film is written by Halonen, along with Jouni K. Kemppainen and Kevin Frazier, with cinematography by Hannu-Pekka Vitikainen and Arto Halonen, editing by Antti Tuomikoski and Sanna Liinamaa, sound design by Martti Turunen, and music by Tapani Rinne.
The film started its theatrical run in Finland on 5 October 2012 and opened to unusually positive reviews. The DVD premiere will be in February 2013.
