When heroes lie wins great audience with Finnish TV premiere

When Heroes Lie gathered an extraordinary 465 000 viewers for the Finnish national broadcast premiere of the film on YLE TV1 on Monday 11.3 at 21:30 as part of the Dokumenttiprojekti program, and became the most-watched Dokumenttiprojekti film of the past year. Directed and produced by Arto Halonen, When Heroes Lie is a documentary feature film about doping in cross-country skiing.

On YLE Areena, which shows YLE’s programs online, When Heroes Lie has also become one of the most-watched programs. During the day the film was viewed 37 000 times, so the documentary has a total of more than half-a-million viewers, an exceptional figure in a country the size of Finland.

When Heroes Lie deals mainly with doping in Finnish skiing history, but also presents previously unpublished information about Italy's ski-doping past. In addition to directing and producing the film, Halonen wrote the script along with Jouni K. Kemppainen and Kevin Frazier.

The Finnish version of When Heroes Lie is further available in a new DVD version, which offers a great deal of additional material, including material on the Italian skier Manuela Di Centa and on the relationship between the Finnish Ski Association and the pharmaceutical company Orion. The DVD also shows the hemoglobin results from the Lahti World Cup in 1997.
